Extreme Makeover Part II

The make-over team was at it again, today! All eyes were peeled looking for kids that needed some new things. Below are some pictures and stories of the kids we were able to help.
I knew these overalls looked way too small for her.....when I changed her into her new outfit (below) I saw that they were for 9-12 month olds! She was really happy to have a dress that fits well!

Ta da!!!

This child wears the same yellow dress every single day to school. We were able to give her a new outfit today. I have never seen her smile....until today! She was really excited about her new clothes.

This afternoon, we went into the city of Kariakoo to buy bulk items of clothing and supplies for school. This city is out of control. It is like NYC China town times a million. There are people everywhere, small window shops overcrowded with items to sell and people trying to bargain and street vendors, as well. Two other volunteers, Maggie and Robbie from Charlotte, also raised money to spend on the children. We pooled our money and bought 20 new soccer balls, 200 pairs of shoes, 16 dozen pair of underwear, whistles, a clock for school and some new cups for the water distribution. We only spent a small portion of what we have to spend....so we are still thinking through other practical things to buy.

Sad news on Mwadenny. When he wasn't at school yesterday, Grace and I went to his house to check on him. His neighbor told us that his Uncle came to get him and take him to see his Aunt in Tanga, a few hours away. I am still holding onto hope that he will be back before the week is over. I find myself with another little one in my lap each morning wishing that it was my little guy. I am working on being a bit less partial. I would hate it if I didn't get to say goodbye to him. Yet, honestly, I don't know that I could. So, it might work out better this way....

Here are some more pictures and a video from today...
We think Fasar is P.D.'s twin....they even dress alike!

I thought this shirt was hilarious. The kids are all Muslim, but wear shirts that were obviously given to them. (I want to say that Rock Hill is near Charlotte...Keiran, is that right?)
(We have also seen people wearing shirts with pictures of Loretta Lynn, Mike Tyson and Martin Luther King, Jr. It is so funny!
One activity we have done with the kids to learn their letters is having them spell the letters using their bodies. We spelled "Africa" today....they loved it!

Here is our version of the "Good morning" song that we have been working on for a few weeks...they are really getting it! They are able to use these conversational pieces in their everyday interactions with us....it is great!

Hi Lauren - I wished you well very early on your adventure - but did not sign my name. Your experience is absolutely amazing. How wonderful for you that you have had this opportunity. You all must feel great doing what you are doing. What a tremendous life-long memory you are creating. I talk with your Mom & Dad and have been asking about you. Just can't believe what I'm reading about your group. I know you will be on your way back home soon. Safe journey and may God keep you all in his care.
Love,
Margaret
