"TIA" is a very common abbreviation heard around the volunteer house each day. It means "This is Africa" and is said when things happen that are potentially frustrating, surprising or simply different than what we are used to. Here are a few "TIA" moments from today.
- After our mornings at school, we are always exhausted. The children have been jumping all over us, crying so that we will pick them up, wetting their pants while we are holding them, fighting with one another, etc. So, today was another wild day and there was little organization in spite of our efforts to create rules and order. After our long morning, the bus was not there to pick us up. So, we called the driver and he was over an hour away. OK. TIA. We picked up our things and took the hour long walk back to the house in 85 degree weather. One of the guys wanted to stop to get a drink, but we all decided that it was so hot and we were so tired, if we stopped walking, we wouldn't begin again.
- As we were driving into town this afternoon, we had to slow down quickly because a herd of cattle was crossing. Cows, goats, chickens and dogs are commonly seen holding up traffic as they cross the street- even the highways. TIA.
- People cut their grass here either by letting a cow chew through it, using hedge clippers, or using a machete. Seriously. Check out the picture below. (Frightening that so many people own these large weapons? Yes.) TIA.
- Many of you have asked about the mosquitoes. They are pretty fierce. We are constantly putting on bug spray- morning, noon and night. We also sleep under mosquito nets every night. It is an interesting experience, I'll say that much. I feel like I am in a shroud. Jenny modeled this for you all in the picture below. TIA.
Ten of us are going to Zanzibar tomorrow morning for the weekend. It is a nearby island that apparently has great beaches and good seafood. I will let you know how that goes! I plan to take my computer with me to see if I can update the blog, so if you don't see new posts....we are all still alive, just unable to find an Internet connection =)
